Emerald Isle has a stunning coastline and picturesque landscapes, which provides the perfect setting to witness breathtaking sunsets. If you’re seeking the ideal location to marvel at the evening sky ablaze with color, look no further. This post features all of my favorite places to enjoy the sunset as well as some tips and tricks for catching the best sunset!
I’ve been lucky enough to visit Emerald Isle my entire life and have lived here for over a decade. I love to enjoy the outdoors and have traveled all over the world. I’d like to consider myself a sunset connoisseur and if you follow me on instagram, then you know I’ve never met a sunset that I didn’t like! I have been lucky enough to travel to many different countries and I still think the sunsets in Emerald Isle can rival those all over the globe! In this blog post, I will guide you through the top spots in Emerald Isle to watch the sunset and soak in the beauty the Crystal Coast offers.
The Time of Year for Emerald Isle Sunsets
Where to watch depends on the time of year. Emerald Isle, NC is unique because we are a South facing beach; most beaches on the East Coast of the USA face West. Because of this, you can enjoy sunsets on the beach or the sound side of the island depending on the time of year.
If you’re visiting in the summer (April through September-ish) you’ll want to find a sunset spot on the Sound side! In the winter, (October through March-ish) the best sunset viewing is on the beach side of the island. Both times of year offer some incredible sunsets and the favorite time of year to watch the sunset differs between every local you ask. Keep reading for some of the best places to view the sunset on the island and the time of year you can catch them!
Emerald Isle Sunsets at the Beach
There’s nothing quite like watching the sunset from the soft sands of Emerald Isle Beach. If you’re visiting in the area in the winter months you can take full advantage of the beautiful beach sunset! Just take a walk on the beach and you’ll get to see the beautiful orange glow! Set up your beach chairs or blanket, listen to the soothing sound of the waves, and watch as the sky transforms into vibrant colors. The beach offers unobstructed views, creating an unforgettable experience. The sunset is still visible from the beach in summer months, but will set towards the sound side of the island and may be obstructed by houses.
A Sound Front Emerald Isle Sunset
By far the best way to take advantage of the summer sunsets is to stay on the Sound Side of the island. Living on the sound, we get to enjoy the most beautiful sunsets throughout the summer. Sunsets are one of the many things that makes the sound side of the island my favorite! My backyard is truly my favorite place to watch the sunset, but you’ll have to follow on instagram to see that. If you’re renting a house, consider whether seeing a nightly sunset is a priority for you. If you’d prefer to stay at the oceanfront in the summer, there are still plenty of places to catch epic sunsets!
Cedar Street Park
The Cedar Street dock is a favorite sunset location for locals and vacationers to catch the last glimpse of the sunset each day. Located at 7800 Cedar Street, at the end of Cedar Street, this small parking area and park is the perfect place to catch an Emerald Isle sunset! There is parking available for 7 cars, so make sure you arrive early! Check it out and catch a little fishing, shrimping and floating before catching the sunset! The park has a small picnic area, kayak launch and public pier.
The Point of Emerald Isle Sunsets
At the most western tip of the island, known as the Point, you can catch a good sunset no matter the time of year! It requires a little walking but is so worth it! This secluded area where the Bogue Inlet meets the Atlantic Ocean presents an idyllic setting to witness the sun’s final moments as it dips below the horizon.
Free parking is available, but there is only one small parking lot which fills up quickly during high season. (Note: Please don’t park in someone’s yard! Towing is enforced in this area, not to mention it’s rude). You’ll find the Station Street parking lot near the end of Coast Guard Road (11001 Station St, Emerald Isle). Just after you bear left, you’ll see the parking lot directly on the right hand side of the road. There are multiple beach access points if you walk towards Inlet Drive and to the right. However, if you want the most direct path to the Point follow Inlet Drive until it intersects with Bogue Court.
Beach Driving Sunsets
If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle you can also purchase a beach driving permit at EIPD to drive on the beach! Beach driving is allowed in the off season between September and April. There are three access points for beach driving on Emerald Isle, with one being located directly at the Point! Beach driving is a unique and exhilarating experience that allows you to enjoy sunsets in a whole new way. The freedom of driving along the sandy shores brings a sense of adventure and connection with nature. It provides an opportunity to discover secluded spots and create lasting memories. Of course, please be sure to follow beach driving regulations and be mindful of dune protection. Buckle up, enjoy the ride, and embrace the sunset!
Bogue Inlet Pier Sunset
The Bogue Inlet Pier is not only a great spot for fishing, but a prime location to catch a magnificent sunset. Since the pier stretches almost 1000ft, it makes a great location to catch the sunset throughout the year! The sunset is best viewed during the winter when the sun goes down over the beach, but the Pier still offers great views during the summer. It is fun to stroll and see what fisherman have caught or enjoy an ice cream from a nearby shop. Walk along the pier, watch the waves and witness the sun descend below the horizon.
Sunset Cruises
For an unforgettable sunset experience, embark on a boat tour or charter and watch the sunset from the water. The unique perspective of the sunset against the backdrop of the expansive ocean is bound to leave you breathless. Capt. Ron’s Island Tours is one great option because only 6 people go on the boat and it has an upper deck to watch the sunset. Capt Mike is another great affordable option! There are also many outfitters that leave from nearby towns like Beaufort and Swansboro. They make great places to grab dinner after sunset!
Cape Lookout Sunsets
Catching the sunset at Cape Lookout sunset is a breathtaking experience. The silhouette of the iconic Cape Lookout Lighthouse against the colorful sky is mesmerizing. You can easily take a boat trip to Cape Lookout lighthouse from Harkers Island with Island Express Ferry during their stargazers trips. During select periods of the year you can also experience the lighthouse lit up. It is absolutely stunning against a dark sky and has become one of our favorite traditions at Christmas on the Crystal Coast! Standing on the sandy shores and witnessing the sunset at Cape Lookout Lighthouse is a true feast for the senses. The gentle sound of crashing waves, the cool ocean breeze, and the stunning visual display all come together to create an unforgettable sunset experience
Swansboro, NC Sunsets
Swansboro, NC, offers several beautiful spots where you can see a beautiful sunset near Emerald Isle. In Swansboro, NC the sunset happens towards the ocean and follows the path of the White Oak River. One of the prime locations is the Swansboro Bicentennial Park, a Waterfront Park with a small boardwalk and a favorite of fishermen. The views of the White Oak River and Intracoastal Waterway create a stunning backdrop for the sunset. You can also enjoy a waterfront restaurant to watch the sunset. Whether you choose to relax by the water’s edge or take a leisurely stroll, the sunset in Swansboro will make you grateful for the natural beauty that surrounds this charming coastal town.
Beaufort, NC Sunsets
Beaufort, NC is a captivating place to watch the sunset! The sun descends over the picturesque waterfront and sets directly over the waters of Taylor’s Creek. The reflection of the sunset colors over the water creates breathtaking hues and often a stunning mirrored effect. On the waterfront, you’ll find sailboats and houseboats which create an excellent contrast to the sunset colors. The Beaufort boardwalk is a great place to stroll or enjoy a waterfront dinner and grab some family photos! The combination of the town’s rich maritime history, the natural beauty of the coast, and the colors of the sky come together to create unforgettable sunsets. Because of this, Beaufort one of my favorite towns on the Crystal Coast! Make sure to read this post on the Hidden Gems of Beaufort, NC before you go!
Tideland Trail
The Tideland Trail, one of my favorite trails on the Crystal Coast, offers a great place to experience the sunset. As you follow the trail, you’re surrounded by lush coastal marshes. The setting sun can cast a mesmerizing glow. My favorite place to watch the sunset on the trail is on the outer loop trail just after the area where it splits from the inner loop. There is a beautiful bench perfect for catching the sunset. On a calm night the vibrant colors of the sunset reflect on the calm waters of Bogue Sound and create a picturesque scene. The peaceful ambiance make the Tideland Trail sunsets a truly perfect place to capture the sunset on the Crystal Coast.
Local Waterfront Restaurants
Several waterfront restaurants in Emerald Isle offer not only excellent cuisine but also breathtaking sunset views. Enjoy a memorable dining experience, while savoring the sunset and nature’s stunning display. (The picture above was taken in the summer at Blacksheep in Beaufort, NC) For my favorite waterfront restaurants, be sure to read my post on the best waterfront restaurants on the Crystal Coast! These restaurants are right on the water and many offer incredible sunset views!
Emerald Isle Sunset Viewing Tips
When you’re enjoying the sunset in Emerald Isle, NC make sure you plan to arrive at your sunset location a minimum of 15 minutes prior to sunset- especially on the sound side. This gives you time to get settled and make sure that you don’t miss an of the beautiful sunset colors. The best sunset shots, often occur during the “golden hour” — the period shortly before sunset when the light is soft and warm. If you’re taking pictures of people I highly recommend aiming for that period of time. Also, since on the sound side, the sun sets over the trees it happens slightly earlier than what you’ll find on an online search for sunset times.
Pro tip! Don’t leave your sunset spot right away! Most of the time the prettiest colors come out after the actual sunset itself. If there are a few clouds in the sky, wait awhile to see if the sky erupts with color! Often my best sunset pictures in Emerald Isle are taken slightly after the sun has actually set.
Sunset Weather
The perfect sunset weather is actually not a clear sky, but slightly cloudy. You need the clouds to catch all of the colors of the sunset. Some of the prettiest sunsets I’ve seen happen just after an afternoon summer thunderstorm, so don’t write off the opportunity for a great a sunset just because there was a shower that day. As long as there is a gap in the clouds be on the lookout for sunset colors!

I was recently on the North Carolina coast and loved the sunsets there. This is great information about how to see them properly. I agree that the best part of the sunset sometimes is after the sun has actually set.
So glad you enjoyed your trip!
