Are you struggling with how to make your wedding unique ? We knew our wedding would be large, because we wanted to invite so many family and friends. However, I wanted to make sure that our wedding still felt special and sentimental. Here are some of the things that we did to make our wedding uniquely us!

If you missed my Wedding Q & A post be sure to check it out for more details about our wedding!

Personal Touch

I found the fun idea to add signs on each of the bathroom door’s of us as children! I attached them with command strips so they wouldn’t damage the venue and they made for a fun bathroom entrance!

Memory Table

In the year prior to us getting married, my husband lost both of his grandfathers. We knew we wanted to do something special for them, as well as our other grandparents, friends and family members that had passed away. This table was right by the front entrance and was draped in a tablecloth that my great grandmother made. We added pictures of our loved ones, artwork from their weddings, and I created the sign that you can download at the bottom of this post!

Something Old

I tried to incorporate as many unique things from my family as I could. For my something old, we added button’s from my grandmother’s wedding dress down the back of mine and I used flowers from her veil in my hair. My something borrowed was my other grandmother’s engagement ring. Those little details are the sorts of things that you’ll remember for a long time to come.

We also incorporated family into our rings. I was lucky enough to inherit my grandmother’s wedding ring. I didn’t like how it was set before, but we had it redesigned into something that fits me perfectly. We also had my grandfather’s ring melted and shaped into waves for John’s ring. If you have the opportunity to use a family heirloom even if it means redesigning them, they will make wearing them that much more memorable!

Incorporate the Whole Family!

We had discussed having our dog, Kai, as part of our wedding party. A lot of people tried to talk me out of it because they said he could ruin the day. At the rehearsal practice he bolted down the aisle and people still tried to talk me out of having him. Guess what- he did the same thing at the wedding, but it was so totally us it was perfect! Sure, it didn’t go as planned, but I don’t regret having him there for a second! It helped to make our wedding unique!

Thanking Our Guests

One of my goals was to make sure each of our guests knew how special they were and how glad we were that they had joined us to share in our day. The first thing that I did was create thank you’s. On each place setting was a printed thank you note telling our guests how grateful we were to have them there. Download the editable file at the bottom of this post!

I also left an envelope at each table. Each table’s note was unique to them and told them some of the things we were specifically grateful for. On some table’s, the note was specific to how we knew those people, while at other tables it helped people get to know each other. For example, we had one table of couples that had all been mentor’s to us in our lives. While none of the couples knew each other before the wedding, they already had something in common because they had all been a part of helping us grow. For our close friends, we included an envelope with some embarrassing pictures we had found from the past.

I heard from multiple people how meaningful they were, which meant a lot to me because I wanted them to understand how important they were. It made me feel like they will remember details that made our wedding unique.

Highlight Your First Dance

Our first dance was Jack Johnson’s, Better Together. We also ordered the words “Better Together” for our cake topper, as well as, the back of our chair’s at our table. If there are a few words from your song that are meaningful to you, it makes for a cute and subtle salute to your song; as well as, a cute keepsake! We now have the words hanging in our living room!

Stick with a Theme

I think the thing that helped our wedding not be too over the top, was that I tried to stick with a subtle theme. Our color scheme was consistent throughout the wedding. I used teal, white and gold on all of our invitations, on our guest book and on our invitations. I’ll be sharing how I made our invitations soon, but I think the cohesiveness from the Save the Dates to the Invites helped carry the theme throughout!

In addition to the color scheme, we also designed our own wedding “logo” which was our return address stamp on our wedding invitations, was on the sign that we had people sign as our guestbook, and was on our favor’s which were pint glasses. Keeping one theme throughout the entire wedding will help the wedding feel more polished.
