John and I love to take advantage of any opportunity for adventure, and our Virginia Beach dog friendly trip was no exception! Thanks to a work trip to Virginia Beach we got to have a mini family vacation and visit some great breweries along the way! Since we were leaving our own beach town of Emerald Isle, NC we didn’t want to spend a ton of time on the beach, and instead wanted to checkout each of the fun dog friendly Virginia beach breweries! Since we didn’t want to leave the dogs home, we decided to load up the car and bring the dogs! I found myself on the road googling “Dog Friendly Breweries Near Me”
During our trip we met some we met some amazing people and found some super dog friendly breweries in Virginia Beach! Who can resist a dog friendly beach and craft beer! (In the off season the beaches in Virginia Beach are dog friendly all day and you can even take you pup off leash!) Back Bay Brewery

Of all the dog friendly breweries in Virginia Beach, Back Bay is definitely our favorite! Not only is it very convenient to downtown with great beer; dogs are allowed inside their tasting room and it is a super laid back bar. The friendly bartenders here are really what made it so wonderful- even though we clearly weren’t locals they welcomed us like we were! They have plenty of board games for you to play and few really good restaurants located in the same shopping center. The first night we had dinner at Gringo’s Taco’s next door and it was very good! The pizza place nearby was also highly recommended! Pro Tip: there is plenty of parking on the road behind the Brewery if you drive around back!

Young Veterans Brewing Company

Both times we’ve visited YVBC the people have been so friendly and treated us like family! This small brewery has a military theme for all of their beers. If you like IPA’s I highly recommends the Kiowa IPA! They are such a dog friendly brewery that they even allow dogs indoors! Our dogs, Mana and Kula tagged along, and we ordered dinner from Yama sushi nearby. (If you’re looking for a yummy dinner the specialty rolls were HUGE) The dogs enjoyed lot’s of attention while we ate!

Wasserhund Brewery

Wasserhund is a brewery that was started by a family based off of their love of beer, Germany and dogs. The breweries name translates from “water dog” in German and has a beautiful patio you can take your dogs! We just couldn’t resist taking our two Wasserhunds since our dogs both love the water! My favorite part of this brewery was the pizza! I highly recommend their pizza rolls and their pizza is as delicious as their beer. The dogs loved getting to hang out with other people and luckily for the humans, it was a beautiful day to sit outside, as dogs are welcome only on the outdoor patio.

Smart Mouth Brewery Pilot House

SmartMouth Brewery is also located downtown in the heart of Virginia Beach. While dogs aren’t allowed inside, they have a huge patio that is dog friendly. If you’re in VA Beach on a pretty day, I highly recommend taking the pups! The brewery is a large open space with long tables that would be a great place to meet up with a group of friends! They have recently become famous for their “Lucky Charms” beer which was absolutely delicious! SmartMouth often has food trucks, so be sure to check their schedule before you go!

New Realm Brewery

New Realm Brewery is based out of Atlanta but recently opened a second location in Virginia Beach. The brewery is HUGE, with a ton of beer selections, and an extensive menu. Once again, dogs must stay outside on the patio, but they have a GIGANTIC fire-pit which kept us warm! Their food was delicious and I can highly recommend their Mac and Cheese appetizer. It was very yummy and was plenty to share!

Commonwealth Brewery

Commonwealth is a little further away if you are staying downtown, but is well worth the drive. They have a wonderful beer selection and huge open brewery that is dog friendly indoors. They also have frequent food trucks and we were lucky enough to get to taste La Cucina di Sophia while we were there! I loved their fun glasses that were perfectly paired for each type of beer!

Where to Stay?

When we’ve traveled with the dogs in the past to places like Asheville, (more on that trip here) we have always stayed at AirBnB’s, so we were a little nervous to take the dogs to a “real” hotel. I can honestly say that the Double Tree in Virginia Beach was super dog friendly and we actually saw lots of other people staying with their furry friends while we were there! Mana was very curious about the elevator the entire time but loved getting to spend time with Mom and Dad! While I would certainly recommend this hotel, there are surprisingly a bunch of reasonably priced hotels to stay with your dog including some ocean front options.
