Time for another update! We have officially finished the deconstruction phase and are getting ready to put everything back together! I can’t wait to get to that point!

Since our house was built as a vacation home it had no functioning master and the worlds smallest closet! While we’re redoing the downstairs bath we wanted to go ahead and rework the layout of the downstairs bedrooms.

Our original layout is two bedrooms with a VERY small Jack and Jill bath in the middle.

Here are a few pictures of our before bathroom so you can get a feel of our original “master” bathroom. It was certainly better than nothing. However, it was hard for two people to share at the same time.

Behind the wall to the right is the tiny shower. Just big enough to suds up and rinse.

Due to the lack of closet space when we moved in we used one of the two bedrooms as a closet/office/catch all room. We certainly want to have clearly designated spaces in our new master. (Please excuse the mess. While I’m not the cleanest person it wasn’t normally THIS messy- this photo was taken once we had already started packing boxes.)

We got realllly lucky that none of the walls in this part of the house are load bearing so we developed a plan for the new master and started demolition! The walls had molded from the moisture in our bathroom since it didn’t vent- so the day this happened was an exciting one!

When we demoed the bathroom we learned that there is duct work in the wall near the pantry wall. The cost of moving the duct work was too high so we had to come up with a new bathroom layout incorporating the duct work.

The plan is to close in the sliding glass door that is in the future closet. We discussed replacing it with a smaller window but decided against it for cost saving. The closet will be smaller than our original room, but it will be designated as a true closet and will have plenty of organized storage for all of our clothes!

The bathroom footprint will slide over a few feet and be much larger than the original 🙂 In the picture below, the shower will be oriented the other direction and the space next to the toilet will be a linen closet. I would have preferred to switch the toilet and the linen closet, but with the duct work, the plumbing wouldn’t allow it.

This is the closed in sliding door. There was lots of damage from a leak in the slider on the sub-floor that has now been replaced!

We’ve begun to frame things in and it is all starting to take shape!

And now my favorite part…drumroll please.. POCKET DOORS!!! I’ve had an obsession with pocket doors since I was a little kid and  my grandparents had one going from their kitchen to their dining room. When John told me that his idea for the layout would have to include pocket doors I was more than a little bit excited!!

Let me give you the current tour- This is the view looking from the bedroom toward the bathroom. The opening to the right is the door to the main room. And, see all that wood?!? John asked the framers to add a couple of extra 2×4’s to mount a TV on and they went a little over board!

Walking into the bathroom this is the view of the bedroom. (Ignore the shelving that I still need to take down from when that room used to be our closet.) On the left is where our toilet will be and John is excited that there will be a “view” out the window… I guess it’s a guy thing!

Here’s another view- the toilet will be on the right. The linen closet is now framed in and the walk in shower will be to it’s left. The header there is where the doorway used to be to the great room. John framed it in- I think it will be fun to say one day to our kids that “Dad built that wall!”
And here’s pocket door number two! Leading from the bathroom to the closet. I figure that this one will likely stay open most of the time, but it will be nice to be able to close it off when we have guests, since we do not have another bath on this floor.

Once plumbing is finished, electrical is completed and drywall is hung it will be time to start with finishes! We’re starting to think about what type of flooring to put in the closet and the type of finishes to put in the bathroom!

What color do you think I should paint the pocket doors? I’m thinking I might want a surprise pop of color!
Thanks for reading!
